On September 2, the European Parliament hosted policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), who showcased the vast potential of these new technologies. The event was organized by Axel Voss, a member of the European Parliament from EPL, and euROBIN – a European network of excellence in robotics, funded under the “Horizon Europe” program.
Demonstrations of some of the most technologically advanced robots manufactured in Europe showed Europe’s enormous potential in both fields. Today, Europe faces a major challenge today. Considering the development of artificial intelligence, we must fully – yet responsibly – harness the opportunities that new technologies offer us. In the context of rapid technological development in both the United States and China, European institutions are focusing on legislation that will guarantee the European community’s sovereignty. This topic was raised repeatedly during the event.
We are already proposing initiatives designed to support this direction. One of them is The AI Continent Action Plan. This strategy aims to boost innovation and the adoption of AI in Europe, thereby strengthening its technological independence. The plan also improves the coordination of activities and, most importantly, the monitoring of AI development, including through the Apply AI Alliance and the AI Observatory.
Another important example is the Apply AI Strategy – a strategy focused on Europe’s transition from an approach cantered solely on regulating AI to actively implementing and developing AI-based solutions. The plan focuses on strengthening technological sovereignty and properly managing the risks associated with the development of new technologies.
