Despite a slight decline in poverty across the EU (17.4%), as many as 93 million people – 21% of the Union’s population remain at risk of poverty or exclusion. Among children, the figure is nearly 24%.
We are about to begin work on the first-ever European strategy to combat poverty. It should strengthen the efforts of member states and regions and not replace them.
In our regions, local services are already delivering results including institutions like ROPS, led by people such as Ms. Agnieszka Gabruk, who understand residents needs best. They are the ones who need the tools, the funding, and clear rules of action.
We need stronger EU funding, closer cooperation, and simpler procedures.
Europe must fight poverty more effectively.
