Explanation of Vote: Consumer Rights for Package Travel

I support the adoption of the revised directive on the rights of consumers of package travel, as it establishes fairer and more transparent rules for passengers across the European Union. The new rules strengthen the protection of travellers while also simplifying certain procedures for the tourism industry.

Above all, the directive improves fairness toward consumers. It introduces clearer rules on the circumstances under which a traveller may terminate a contract free of charge and receive a refund. As a result, passengers gain greater legal certainty, particularly in extraordinary situations such as crises or mass trip cancellations.

Another important element is an improved system for filing and handling complaints. Package travel organisers will be required to confirm receipt of a complaint within 7 days and to provide a response within 60 days. This solution strengthens travellers rights and ensures more effective enforcement of their claims.

I also support greater transparency of information for consumers, particularly when purchasing travel services online and in the case of linked travel arrangements. This will ensure that travellers know exactly what rights they are entitled to.

I believe this balanced agreement strengthens consumer trust in the tourism market, improves passenger protection, and at the same time provides clear and enforceable rules for businesses. That is why I voted in favour of adopting this directive.
