I voted in favor of the report “EU strategy for the rights of persons with disabilities post-2024” because I believe it is an important step toward ensuring equal rights for persons with disabilities in the EU.
I believe that the strategy must be strengthened and adapted to the current challenges that people with disabilities continue to face. Guaranteeing decent employment, access to adequately adapted housing, and the unrestricted right to vote are just a few examples of areas where the actions of the EU and national authorities must be intensified and better coordinated.
A new, more ambitious strategy, if it is to be an effective tool, requires increased funding. Therefore, I believe that adequate funds should be included in the budget for the new multiannual financial framework for 2028–2034.
Nevertheless, guaranteeing equal rights for people with disabilities requires not only increased financial resources but also a change in the overall approach to this issue. This approach should be based on supporting the independence of individuals, a principle that is also reflected in the report.
